Ash for Joinery
Using Ash in joinery
Timber framing with green Oak is almost a building genre of it's own and as a building material Oak has a legendary status for it's solidity and longevity. The green Oak framing practice incorporates long lived methods of construction to produce outstanding results in homes, schools, offices, industrial buildings and in just about any other structural framing capacity.
Ash for joinery tends to used as a hardwood option that can be painted, but Ash is beautiful left unpainted with a finish and was traditionally used unpainted in car manufacture and coachbuilding - look out for the Ash on a Morris Traveller or Mini Clubman.
It's colouring is pale, a light brown cream/white, which can be darker in larger trees. Colour and grain variations do occur, some brown or green streaking are sought after traits. Ash generally has a medium coarse, straight grain with medium workability with machine or hand tools.
It is not a durable timber, although it does have good strength properties, and is renowned for being good for steam bending as it is resistant to splitting. Gluing, painting and staining all work well.
Available in Air Dried or Kiln Dried T&T boards, dimensions are relative to the size of logs which make up the raw materials. This can mean lengths up to 4.0 or 5.0m and widths up to 300 or 350mm and 500mm across the heart.
