Oak Flooring
Local oak timber for flooring
Oak is an extremely durable, tough strong timber. It is perfectly suitable for bespoke flooring projects and the dimensions it is available in will set a homegrown floor apart from any pre-made flooring.
In it's prime grade form it's pale-golden brown colouring and medium coarse but straight grain make a very attractive floor with colour variation enough to maintain some interest. The character grade however, is the purist's choice as it is what it says it is, exhibiting character of the Oak species to the full. This includes any interesting patterns like the wild grain around small, pippy knots or the sweeping grain around larger, fuller knots and it does not exclude the tiny little surface splits that may appear as the timber ages in situ.
Dimensions are relative to the size of Oak logs which make up the raw materials. This can mean lengths up to 4.5m and widths up to 400 or 450mm although the final product always depends on the specification required.
The Oak can be supplied in T&T boards for you to work yourself, or alternatively we can cts and par boards to be sq/e, rebated or T&G sides.
Homegrown Oak will be dried to 10-12% moisture content but then, depending on storage conditions, can pick up moisture to 16-18%. This has to be factored in to the production and installation of a bespoke floor. The main consideration being shrinkage/expansion post installation, both of which would depend on site conditions, use of the space, methods of fixing etc. As a point of reference the rule of thumb for moisture movement in Oak is (awaiting insert)
As always, each case is different, and we are happy to discuss requirements should you have any questions. The links below may be useful for information.
